Michael Cieply: Looking For A Viewer-Powered, Dog Days Oscar Hopeful
The Dog Days of summer—vaguely from mid-July through mid-August, depending on who does the counting—may not seem like much of an Oscar crucible. You'd think most Academy voters would be sipping Margaritas in Malibu, or Limoncello Martinis somewhere on the Mediterranean.
But as often as not in the…

Michael Cieply: Waiting For ‘Saturday Night,’ The Jason Reitman Dramedy About Comedy
Lo, the enduring miracle of the film awards year. Just when things begin to look hopeless—and it was looking pretty bleak a month ago—intriguing, maybe even watchable, prospects suddenly sprout. The movies are like Osiris, that old Egyptian resurrection god: You just can't keep 'em down.
As August…
Michael Cieply: Will The Hollywood Glam Factor Hurt Kamala Harris?
I took a long walk around the neighborhood this week. Those unnerving 'Dark Brandon' campaign signs—the ones with fiery, X-ray vision eyes on a big Biden head—were gone. But the Harris for President signs hadn't shown up yet.
Any day now, of course, they will. A quick online check showed a full array…
Michael Cieply: When The Dust Settles, It Might Be Time For A Hollywood Political Reboot
Robert De Niro ranted. Bette Midler blared about “autocracy.” Lea DeLaria declared war. But Donald Trump, though convicted in New York and shot in Pennsylvania, is still marching toward Milwaukee, where the Republican National Convention begins tomorrow.
Meanwhile, George Clooney called for a new…
Michael Cieply: Thought For A Hot July – Why Not Shake Up The Oscars With a “Midsummer Rule”?
It's July 1, summertime, a hot one. Political storms threaten. In West L.A., one of the awards-friendly billboards on Wilshire is blank; another is selling spring water. Not a moment to be worrying about the Oscars.
Or is it?
Last year on this…
Michael Cieply: Searching For The Jewish Soul In The Academy’s ‘Hollywoodland’
Pondering Will Smith's recent triumph at a local Cinemark and Donald Trump's post-conviction surge, I got to thinking about “movie-think.”
You know, the way we've become accustomed, after watching hundreds and hundreds of mainstream films, to thinking…
Michael Cieply: Where Movies Wither, Museums Suddenly Bloom
A happy surprise on Friday — gleaned from a soggy copy of the Santa Monica Mirror left in the curbside box — was news that we almost have a spanking new science fiction museum in these parts. Called SCI-FI WORLD: The Experience, it occupies the old Sears…
Michael Cieply: The New Hollywood–Elites, The Audience And A Wall Of Indifference
In morose moments, and I'll admit to having a few, I sometimes stare at a framed illustration on my work desk. Entitled "HOLLYWOOD 1988," it is a whimsical map of the motion picture business as it existed back then. The concept and a lot of the sight gags were mine; but Nancy Ohanion was the artist who…
Michael Cieply: Hollywood Can Still Schmooze, But Not At Patrick’s Roadhouse
As of Friday, Patrick's Roadhouse was still closed. Plates and pitchers were stacked inside. The old-style coffee maker seemed ready to go, and there were even some bright green lights shining along the roof. But the place looked like a radioactive version of the Spanish Kitchen, frozen in time, plus…
Michael Cieply: Haim Saban Roars Like A Mogul, And The Echoes Still Sound
The loudest voice in Hollywood last week belonged to Haim Saban. "Bad . . . Bad . . . bad decision, on all levels," he roared, in an email to President Joseph Biden, sent via White House aides, denouncing the Administration's announced plan to withhold bombs and artillery shells from Israel if it proceeds…
Michael Cieply: Two Weeks Out, The Academy Museum Preps A Cautious But Correct ‘Hollywoodland’ Opening
Two weeks from today, finally, the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures will open its new permanent exhibition, Hollywoodland: Jewish Founders and the Making of a Movie Capital. For many, it amounts to an act of completion. A Hollywood film museum without a special tribute to Jewish roots has felt for the…
Michael Cieply: Participant Sank When Everyone Jumped In
At first, I was shocked by the news that Participant Media was dying. Such an appealing company. Smart. Mindful. Vibrant. Forward-thinking. The producer of intelligent films like Spotlight and Green Book, with a distinctly progressive message.
How could…
