Rob McElhenney On Emmy Love For ‘Welcome To Wrexham’, Plus New Seasons For ‘Mythic Quest’ And ‘It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia’ – Behind The Lens

Rob McElhenney video interview

It’s always sunny these days for Rob McElhenney, who is celebrating six Emmy nominations for Welcome to Wrexham including for Outstanding Unstructured Reality Program –after seeing the series win five Emmys in January for Season 1. Those wins include a first statuette for McElhenney for the show he shares co-host, executive producer and co-creator credit with Ryan Reynolds.

The series, about the Welsh town of Wrexham and the football team that has put them on the map, has been an out-of-the-box hit for FX. For McElhenney it represents yet another landmark series to go along with the network’s It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia, which is about to start shooting its 17th season making it the longest-running comedy series in TV history. He also has just wrapped shooting Apple TV+’s fourth season of Mythic Quest, which is likely to air sometime early in 2025. Like Wrexham, McElhenney not only stars in both, but he also is a creator, writer, producer and sometimes director even on both shows while playing Ian Grimm on Mythic, and Mac on Sunny.

McElhenney joins me for this episode of my Deadline video series Behind the Lens to talk about all three including his excitement over his latest Emmy nomination as EP of Wrexham. It has been a long time coming, especially since neither the critically acclaimed Mythic nor the beloved Sunny have been embraced by the Television Academy — though both are more than worthy. We talk about all of this including what may be happening in the upcoming seasons of all three series. In addition to all this, McElhenney is spending much of his time working with the Wrexham football team that he and Reynolds bought, in addition to many other activities as an entrepreneur.
