ABC News has tapped Almin Karamehmedovic, executive producer of its top rated World News Tonight, as its next president.
Karamehmedovic will report to Debra OConnell, president of Disney news group and networks.
He succeeds Kim Godwin, who departed earlier this year after a sometimes tumultuous tenure.
In his role, Karamehmedovic will oversee the news divisions day to day operations, as well as its programming including World News Tonight and Good Morning America.
“Almin has devoted his career to ABC News, mastering every role and elevating excellence in journalism by connecting with viewers in a very meaningful and profound way that resonates with them,” OConnell said. “He is a widely respected, seasoned journalist of the highest order who has worked his way up to senior executive producer of World News Tonight with David Muir, earning the trust of colleagues and industry peers along the way. I have no doubt ABC News will reach new heights under his leadership.”
Karamehmedovic said in a statement, “I approach this role with great respect and humility, not only for the hundreds of colleagues around the world whose tireless contributions fuel the unflinching and unbiased reporting of ABC News but also for the viewers we serve.”
He has served as executive producer of World News Tonight since August 2014, and added news content development to his portfolio in January 2022. Karamehmedovic previously was executive producer of Nightline, and also was EP on a primetime edition for two seasons. He also produced special reports, primetime hours and 20/20 specials. He joined the network in 1998 as a freelance video editor based in London. In 2001, he was one of the first journalists to gain access to Tora Bora in Afghanistan, where Osama bin Laden was hiding.
Karamehmedovic takes the helm of the news division as outlets across the board are grappling with cost-cutting, as well as trying to navigate the shift in consumer habits toward streaming. He also will oversee ABC News Live, the network’s streaming channel.
